BOW STREET RUNNERS
In the same journal, says the London Times, which announced the death of the late Sir Thomas Henry on the 16th inst., there appeared a simple record of the death, at the advanced aged of eighty-four, of William Ballard, one of the most famous of the old officers vulgarly denominated "the Bow street Runners." Ballard received his first promotion in 1823, at Marlborough street "office", having earned hhis appointment by repeated acts of daring and skill, by which some of the most notorious offenders of the day were brought to justice. Sir Frederick Roe, who had just succeeded Sir R. Birne as Chief Magistrate, subsequently drew the attention of the Home Secretary to the high qualifications of Ballard, and thus caused his further promotion to Bow Street, where he became one of the principal officers. He was the last representative but one of what may be regarded as the old school of Metropolitan Police. The only surviving member of the staff now is Mr. Harry Goddard, who entered the service in 1824, and was for many years employed in the investigation of delicate and important matters, in many instances at the instigation of the Government of the day...
