     Henry Ballard was born in September 1840 at Southampton, Hampshire, , England.^1,2 He was the son of Henry James Ballard.¹ Henry Ballard was Captain of the NATAL (Reg No 51288) a screw steamship of 617 tons gross weight built at Northam in 1865 by Day & Co. She was owned in 1874 by the Union Castle Company operated the Cape mail service.

Southampton Archive Service in 1874 at SS Natal, .³ He was Captain of the NYANZA (Reg No 50137) a paddle steamship of 2082 tons gross weight which was built in 1864 at Blackwall by Thames Ironwork and Shipbuilding Co. and inititally owned by P & O Company before being acquired by Union S.S. Co. in 1873. From 1866 to 1872 she operated Mediterranean mail services and from 1876-80 Cape mail services. She was sold to the Sultan of Zanzibar in 1880.

Southampton Archives Services from 1877 to 1880 at SS Nyanza, .⁴ He was Captain of the DURBAN (Reg No 76838) a screw steamship of 2808 tons gross weight built in Sunderland in 1877 by Jas. Laing and owned by the Union Steam Ship Company. Henry Ballard became Master in 1882 and may have remained her Captain until 1888. In that period she was operating between London and the Cape (1877-83) and Southampton to Natal (1883-8). The Union R.M.S. (Royal Mail Steamer) Durban left Plymouth on 23 November, 1877, encountered heavy seas, sprang a leak and had to turn back to port. Her maiden voyage could not be continued and her passengers and mails were transferred to the Roman. Eventually putting to sea, the Durban experienced engine trouble, but despite these inauspicious beginnings, by 1880 she broke the record for the homeward run from the Cape. Being transferred to the intermediate service, she was then taken off the South African route between 1883 and 1888, returning later as a cargo vessel. In 1893, 11 June, she was homeward bound when wrecked south of Santa Cruz, on the south-east coast of Teneriffe. She was carrying no passengers at the time and all the crew were saved.

Southampton Archive Services in 1882 at Union RMS Durban, .³ He was Captain of the MEXICAN (Reg No 86330) a screw steamship of 4668 tons gross weight register in London in 1883 and built by James Laing of Sunderland. She was owned by the Union Steam Ship Company and operated voyages to South Africa where, in 1900, she sank in a collision off Cape Town. Ballard shared the Master's position with William Bainbridge from 1884 to 1887.
