PC Charles BALLARD of the SWR Police was crossing the track at Eastleigh Station with a hand barrow when he was struck by a train. It is possible that he was helping a member of railway staff move some potatoes whilst he was on his way home. He died the following day at the Royal South Hampshire and Southampton Hospital. At the subsequent Inquest the SWR Police were represented by Inspector WOOD who told the Coroner that crossing the track at the scene of the accident was prohibited by the company rules. Pc BALLARD left a wife and eight children.
