In
the name of god Amen in the year of our Lord God 1530 and on the 22nd
day of July, I Richard Ballard of the parish of Firle <sound> of mind and
in good rememberance being make this my testament and last will in manner and
form following, that is to say First and principally above all other things I
give and bequeath my soul to almighty god to his blessed mother our lady Saint
Mary and to all the Saints in heavan my body to be buried in the churchyard of
Firle. Item I bequeath to the <<high> <altar> of Firle
<church> <13s 4d> Item to <Saint> Richard <shrine?>
<12d> Item I give and bequeath to the said <????> of Firle 2d. Item
I give and bequeath to thirty priests to say <prayers> for my soul and all
christian souls at the day of my every one of them <6d> and one
<couple?> of <chantries?> to be held and <lomda?> amongst poor
people being at my burial for bread and drink according thereto. Item I give and
bequeath to 30 priests to sya <prayers> for my soul <at> my

share of my years

<there> with bread and <limbe> according thereto. Item to have one
priest to sing one whole year in the church of Firle for my soul and all
christian souls at the <assignment> of <my> <day> for John
<Gage> and the said priest to have 10 marks for his wages. Item I give and
bequeath 40 <l> to the most <needful> and <repairing> of the
church of <Firle> as my <maister> <??> John <Gage> shall
think most needful. Item I give and bequeath to every one of my godchildren that
will <come> and <after> <??> <w?rt??> in the month
<????> <4d>. Item I give and bequeath 13s 4d to the mending of the
high way of <Westlands> gate. Item I bequeath 13s 4d to the mending of the
<way> against long <furlong>. Item I give and bequeath to <Annable?>
my wife 10 l in money 2 <kine> the bed the <house> my
<???> all that <belong> thereto six pair of sheets one brass pot one
kettle one <posset?t> my platters 6 <dishes> 6 saucers and 2
candlesticks. Item it is my mind that my
five sons William Ballard, Robert Ballard, John Ballard, Thomas Ballard and
Lawrence Ballard be my executors and Robert <Habtare?> and Thomas
Pollam to be supervisors and every one of the said ii to have 30d for their
labour. Item it is my will that all the residue of my goods not <????> me
bequeathed be divided equally amongst my five sons at the sight of my maister
Sir John <Gage> maister Edward <Gage> Robert <Salt?> and
Thomas Pellam and if any of them Decease from yet? To be soon? To his.? And
residue to be divided amongst the other at the? All men aforesaid and to this my
last will I have for put my seal this day and month above written witness

Ballard shall pay of his part ten pounds to William his brother Item it is my
will that three parts of my ? That my three children ? Shall have John Thomas
and Lawrence be in the ? And? Of Robert Haster? And Thomas Pollam and the said
Robert Haster? and Thomas Pollam to ? The said goods to the? Of John
Lawrence and Thomas when they be twenty one years of age.
