In the name of the Father the
Son and the Holy Ghost Amen the 15th day of September in the year of our lord
god 1677 and in the nine and twentieth year of the reign of our sovereign Lord
Charles the second by the grace of god of England Scotland France and Ireland
King defender of the faith etc I John Ballard of Weston Subedge in the county of
Gloucester Bachelor in Physic being of perfect memory and remembrance (praised
be god) do make and ordain this my last will and testament in writing hereby
revoking and making void and of none effect all former and other will and wills
whatsoever heretofore by me made.
And first I give and bequeath my soul into the hands of almighty god my maker
hoping through the meritorious death and passion of Jesus Christ my only saviour
and redeemer to receive free pardon and forgiveness of all my sins.
And my body to be buried in Christian burial in the chancel of Weston
Subedge next to the body of my dear wife there interred (if the minister will so
permit) if not then either in the church or churchyard at the discretion of my
executor hereinafter mentioned. And
as for and concerning all that my worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased
almighty god to bestow upon me I devise give and bequeath the same in manner and
form following (that is to say) Imprimis I devise give and bequeath unto
my loving brother Thomas Ballard of Chipping Campden
in the said county of Gloucester the sum of 900 pounds of lawful money of
England to be paid by my executors hereinafter named within 12 months next after
my decease. Item I devise give and
bequeath unto my loving brother Edmund Ballard of Cow Honeyborn in the said
county the sum of 200 pounds of like lawful money to be paid by my said
executors within 12 months next after my decease.
Item I devise give and bequeath unto my loving kinswoman Elizabeth
Cottrell daughter of my loving sister Frances Cottrell of Saintbury in the said
county the sum of 200 pounds of like lawful money of England to be paid by my
said executors at the day of marriage or when she shall attain the full age of
one and 20 years which shall first happen.
Item I devise give and bequeath unto my loving sister Elizabeth Edwards
wife of William Edwards of <Over> Quinton in the said county the sum of 200
pounds of like lawful money to be paid by my said executors within 12 months
next after my decease. Item I
devise give and bequeath unto Thomas Willis of Weston Subedge aforesaid Gunsmith
the sum of £20.00 of like lawful money of England to be paid by my said
executors within 12 months next after my decease.
And item I devise give and bequeath unto Mrs. Mary Bonner now wife of Mr.
William Bonner of Mickleton in the said county the sum of £20.00 of like lawful
money of England to be paid by my said executors within 12 months next after my
decease. Item I devise give and
bequeath unto my loving kinswoman Ann Ballard of Weston Subedge aforesaid
spinster the sum of £20.00 of lawful money of England to be paid by my said
executors within 12 months next after my decease.
Item I give and bequeath unto the poor of Weston Subedge aforesaid the
sum of 100 pounds of lawful money of England to be employed for their use and
the interest thereof to be duly distributed yearly amongst them as it shall seem
good to Mr. Nathaniel Goodwin of Weston Subedge aforesaid the Churchwardens and
Overseers of the Poor there the said interests to commence from the time of my
death. And item I give and bequeath
unto the poor of Chipping Campden aforesaid the sum of 100 pounds of like the
lawful money of England to be employed for their use and the interest thereof
paid and distributed yearly amongst them as it shall seem good to the said Mr.
Nathaniel Goodwin the churchwardens and overseers of the poor there the interest
also to commence from the time of my death.
And item I devise give and bequeath unto Sir William Keyte of Ebrington
in the said county of Gloucestershire Baronet my three guns with whick locks.
Item I devise give and bequeath unto my loving grandchild John Goodwin
only son of my loving son in law Nathaniel Goodwin by my daughter and his late
wife all of those my messages and tenements and 4 yard lands and half of arable
land meadow and pasture with the appurtenances in Weston Subedge aforesaid now
in my possession or in the possession of my assigns <?????> or under tenants
with the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders of all and singular
the said premises and all my leasehold goods movable and immovable whatsoever or
howsoever to have and to hold the same unto the said John Goodwin his heirs and
assigns forever provided <?????> <?????> it shall happen the said John Goodwin
to die and depart this life before he attain the age of one and 20 years my will
is and I devise give and bequeath the said messages land and leasehold goods
unto my loving kinsman Edward Ballard eldest son of my loving brother Edmund
Ballard of Cow Honeyborn aforesaid to have and to hold the same unto the said
Edward Ballard his heirs and assigns forever.
And also my will is that my loving son in law Nathaniel Goodwin shall
have hold and enjoy the said messuage lands leasehold goods and premises and the
rents <?????> and profits thereof take and enjoy until the said John Goodwin
shall attain the full age of one and 20 years the said Nathaniel Goodwin paying
£40.00 yearly for and towards the education of the said John Goodwin.
And lastly I do indirect make nominate and <?????> appoint the said
Nathaniel Goodwin the sole whole and only executor of this my last will and
testament in witness whereof I the said John Ballard have to this my last will
and testament containing two sheets hereunto put my hand and seal the day and
year first above written
