Will dated

26th April 1819

Will probated

21st June 1819

This will goes on for three whole pages doing nothing more than to define the terms of the trust into which the testator's property is placed.  It does not at any time mention either the names of his children or the type and location of his property. It is the singular most boring will I have ever seen and the least informative it is not until we get to the codicil to the Will that things change slightly. Not even the nomination of his wife as Executrix elicits her name and the other two named Executors are promptly replaced in the codicil!

Be it known unto all that I John Ballard of Deptford in the county of Kent Victualler having by will bearing date the fourth day of February 1812 directed that such real and personal property as I may be possessed of at the time of my decease shall be enjoyed by my wife and children in a manner therein mentioned and being at this time in sound mind and memory do make the following alterations in my said will and be it known to all men by these presents that it is my will that such property as I may be possessed of at the time of my decease shall be appropriated in a manner aforesaid in my said Will amongst my wife and the whole of my children except my eldest son James Ballard whom it is my will and express desire that he shall not so enjoy or be joint in the possession of any part of such property real or personal and further it is my will and desire that such a sum or sums of money which may appear upon my books owing to me by my said son James Ballard be paid with lawful interest into the hands of my executors and executrix  and further it is my desire that my executors hereinafter named be directed to see that my oldest son James Ballard do truly perform his promises as respects my son George Ballard in taking due care that he be thoroughly instructed in his profession and that at proper and reasonable times that he be made acquainted with and instructed in such things as are customary for students at the hospitals and lastly I do hereby revoke and make void my executors in the my said will and I do appoint in a their stead Mr. Thomas Crouch and Mr. Joseph Crump of Saint Paul's Deptford my executors and my wife Mrs. Frances Ballard my executrix of this my last will and testament in witness whereof I have hereunto put my hand and seal the 26th day of April 1819 John Ballard signed and sealed in the presence of William White, William Burrell, James Forrest.
