By John Archibald Ballard CBE a General on the retired list formerly of the Royal Engineers and a master of Her Majesty’s Mint in Bombay and at present residing at No 4 Stainton Place, Blackheath in the county of Kent hereby revoke all wills codicils and testamentary dispositions heretofore made by me and declare this to be my last will and testament. I bequeath to my trustees hereinafter named my general officers sword my orders and decorations and the Sword of Honour which I received from the Sultan of Turkey upon trust to permit my dear wife Joanna Ballard to retain possession thereof during her life and after her death in trust for my eldest son living at her death and if I shall leave no son then living then in trust for my eldest daughter living at my said wife’s death. I bequeath to my son Colin Robert Ballard my colonel’s sword and my box of gold coins and to my brother George Alexander Ballard my gold watch by McCabe left to me by my late uncle Alexander. I bequeath to my said wife my wearing apparel plate furniture books and articles of household use I bequeath to my said wife the sum of £200 to be paid to her within one calendar months after my death and to my sister Susan Jane Ballard the sum of £100. I bequeath all my personal estate (except what else I otherwise dispose of by this my will or any codicil here to) unto my said wife my said brother George Alexander Ballard and my brother-in-law Colin Campbell Scott Moncrieff their executors and administrators upon trust after payment of my funeral and testamentary expenses and debts and the legacies other than specific legacies bequeathed by this my will or any codicil hereto even to permit my said personal estate to remain in its actual state of investment or at their her or his discretion to sell any part thereof and invest the monies produced thereby in the name …

 

Trust for wife and son’s George Alexander Ballard and Colin Robert Ballard with clauses re investment and bequest to daughters if sons die etc.

 

& hereby appoint my said wife my said brother George Alexander Ballard and the said Colin Campbell Scott Moncrieff executrix and executors of this my will and my said wife guardian of my infant children and after herdeath my said brother George Alexander Ballard and Colin Campbell Scott Moncrieff guardians of my infant children during their respective minorities. In witness whereof I the said John Archibald Ballard have to this my last will and testament contained in the sheets of paper set my hand to each sheet thereof this sixth day of January 1880. The Principal Registry in Her Majesty’s High Court of Justice. Be it is known that at the date hereunder written the last will and testament (a copy whereof is hereunto annexed) of John Archibald Ballard, late of No 4 Stainton Place, Blackheath in the county of Kent Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, a General in the retired list, formerly of the Royal Engineers and Master of Her Majesty’s Mint Bombay in the East Indies deceased who died on the second day of April 1880 near Livadia, Greece was proved and registered in the Principal Registry of the Probate Division of Her Majesty’s High Court of Justice and that administration of the personal estate of the said deceased was granted by the aforesaid Court to George Alexander Ballard Esquire the brother of the said deceased and Colin Campbell Scott Moncrieff two of the executors named etc. Dated 23rd April 1880.
