In the name of God amen I George Ballard of Magdalen College in Oxford do make this my last Will and Testament all written with my own hand in manner and form following revoking all other Wills by me formerly made principally I commend my sole into the hands of almighty God hoping and assuredly believing that through the only merits of Jesus Christ my merciful saviour and redeemer to be made partaker of everlasting life in the kingdom of heaven and my body to be buried in a devout Christian manner 6 foot deep in the earth as near the remains of my dear Mother as possible without disturbing her ashes As to my temporal goods which it has pleased got to bestow upon me I dispose of them in the following manner to my Brother Edward Ballard’s children I leave Ten Pounds to be equally divided between them to my Brother Samuel Ballard and his children I leave Ten Pounds to be equally divided between them to my Sister Angela Ellis’s children I leave £10.00 to be equally divided among them and to John and Samuel Ellis sons of my aforesaid Sister Angela Ellis I leave all of my wearing apparel both linen and woollen to be divided between them as my brother Thomas Ballard shall think fit To my most worthy friend the Rev.  Mr. William Talbot of Kineton in Warwickshire who generously settled an annuity of £20.00 per annum upon me in the year 1747 for the payment of only 100 pounds I leave you as a small testament of my gratitude five guineas to buy him a ring and also to Mrs. Talbot wife of my above mentioned friend Mr. Talbot I leave four pieces of old English gold vizt. one Spur Ryal of King Edward the fourth a half sovereign of King Henry the eighth one five and twenty shilling piece of King James the first one quarter piece of Oliver Cromwell's also a small pocket book neatly plated with silver with a gold pen there unto belonging and likewise my transcript of A manuscript in the podium library entitled woman's worth and now a in the hands of Mr. Dawes of <Walsbourne> in Warwickshire.  To my very worthy friend of had an idea for the Rev. Dr. Lyttleton Dean of Exeter I leave my transcript of King Alfred's Saxon version of Orosins to which I have prefixed a dedication and as long preface showing the use and advantages of Saxon learning with the intentions of printing and publishing of that too long concealed work also 15 volumes of Mr. Hearnes two works of his <Doctor Historicus> two volume Walter Hemmingford two volume Otterbourne and 2 Whethamstede 2 vol Annals of <Amstaple> 2 vol Benedictus Abbas 2 Vol John of Glastonbury 2 vol. Robert of Gloucester 2 vol. eight letter concerning some antiquities between at Windsor and Oxford one volume very scarce Mr. Hearne having printed only a few copies for presents.  To the Reverend and learned Mr. John Swinton I leave a beautiful and scarce silver coin of Caligula with the head of Aggrippina on the reverse to the Rev. Mr. Francis Wise Radcliffe Librarian I leave two heads drawn with crayons by the very learned and ingenious Mrs Elstob neatly framed and glassed Vizt. her own head and her brother the Rev.  and learned Mr. Elstob’s and my will and desire is that at his death he will give them both to the Bodleian Gallery as being the most proper repository for such curiosities I likewise give him a fair copy of Mr. Fox's edit of the Saxon gospels to the learned and very worthy gentleman John Loveday of Caversham near Reading in Berkshire Esquire and formerly Gent Com of this college I leave as a small testament of my respect a beautiful old <Missal> finely printed upon vellum and elegantly illuminated bound and gilt also the lives of Saint Thomas Beckett and Saint Thomas Cantilupe the former printed at <Collone> 1639 4to the latter at <Lant> 1674 12mo both in English and both very scarce to my worthy friend Thomas Powys  of Berwick near Shrewsbury Esquire and Gentlemen Commoner of this college I leave as a small testament of my esteem for him a silver snuff box with the curiosity contained in it which he has often seen also five small silver pictures vizt. the Salutation of the Blessed Virgin Saint Catherine Saint Ignatius and Saint Francis King Charles the First King Charles the Second and a neat set of Stephens's additional volumes to the Monasticon to the Rev. Mr. Richard Graves late <fflew> of All Souls College in Oxford and son to my excellent friend and first antiquarian acquaintance Richard Graves of Mickleton in Gloucestershire Esquire I leave my whole collection of Roman coins both silver and brass excepting the above mentioned silver coin of Caligula consisting of about 100 different emperors and empress's but chiefly the former I likewise give him all of my collection of old English coins not otherwise disposed of my will being a series from William the Conqueror down to King Charles the Second excepting two coins the King Stephen and King Richard I to the Rev. Dr. Winchester fellow of Magdalen College Oxford I leave my portfolio volume of prints two heads drawn by Mrs. Elstob Vizt. Joan Hickes and Mr. John Dryden the poet and Turton's print of Oliver Cromwell in Miniature all neatly framed and glassed also I give him a design a copy of Hartman Schodels chronicle large paper commonly called the <Mareinburg> chronicle best edition 1493 to the Rev. Mr. Gilbert Swanne a Fellow of Magdalen College Oxford I leave Sir William Ingdale’s Antiquities of Warwickshire his native county published by Dr. Thomas in two volumes John Ingdale's Origines <Fur??iciales> Ingdale's history of Saint Paul's and Woods' Athena Oxoniensis 1vt edit desiring if I died in Oxford he will be so good as to assist my executor in distributing my several legacies in that place to the Rev. Mr. Richard Scrope <Com> of Magdalen College Oxford I leave Mr. <Fox> Colliers Church History 2 volumes Dr <Donkes's> Sermons 2 volumes Mr. Leads Sermons 2 volumes Mr. Lewis's history of the several translations the Bible and one ten shilling piece of silver of King Charles the First desiring he will assist my executor in distributing and delivering my several legacies in this place to Mr. Richard Walker <?omy> of Magdalen College Oxford I leave 2 volumes of MS Sermons and all my other Sermons of what kind so ever bound or unbound among which are five MS Sermons never printed three of which are excellent discourses all are of A etc in the same hand also letters between a Dr. Hickes and a Danish priest two volumes to the Rev. Mr. Bryne headmaster of Magdalen College School I leave Mr.Borlasses Antiquities of Cornwall to Magdalen College Library Oxford I leave three folios Vizt. John <Bellen?on's> <Scotch> translation of Dr. <Bocthins> extremely scarce Higdon's Polychronicon 1527 Craft and Chronicle 1569 and nine quarters fees John Fox’s edit of the Saxon Gospels 1574 <Turins> and Marshals Edition of the Gospels in Gothic And Saxon Paraphrase upon <????> formerly Bishop Barlowe's own book given him  by the learned editor as appears by his own handwriting on the title page John Harding at chronicle 1543 Dr. Powers History of Wales 1584 the copy in parchment covers that in <?eater> covers being very imperfect Kennett's Parochial Antiquities of Ambrosden and Nurchester Battolys Antiquities <???pind> edit 1745 Amos's Typographical Antiquities Warburton's Vallium Romanum to my friend the Rev. Mr. Timothy Reeve Fellow of Corpus College Oxford I leave Mr. Princes Worthies of Devonshire Mr. Lewis's Life of John Wycliffe of Bp Poacock Dr Knights lives of Erasmus and Dean Colet English Life of <Periestius> Life of Martin Luther 4to 1642 Lives of Luther Zuminglais Oecolampadius Calvin published soon after their deaths and bound up together in one volume 12mo also Burks Life of Archbishop Chichele to Mr. Arthur Nicholson scholar of Brasenose College Oxford I leave a fine copy of Dr. George Hickes Thesaurus large paper the complete bound into volumes 4to Dr. Smith's edition of Bedes Church History large paper Abraham Wholocks Edit of Bedes Saxon Chronicle and Saxon Laws all bound together in one volume a copy of Cadmon's Saxon paraphrase on Genesis bound in Cambridge binding the title and preface in writing Mrs Elstob's Saxon homily on Saint Gregory Mr <Wifos> <Numinorium antiquorium S??nins Bodleianis Reconditorum Catalogus> to the learned and ingenious Mrs. Sarah Chapon wife of the Rev. Mr. Chapon of Charlton near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire I leave all my collection of printed books of whatsoever kind accepting a of the homily the above mentioned road by my learned and ingenious woman and my will and desire is that she may see all my books that are not disposed of by my will and take or box she thinks a proper to make a choice of to make up the number of folios road by woman 50 volumes and to add to the other box road by all woman as many volumes as will make up the number 200 in all 250 volumes also Waller my manuscript collections relating to the lives of learned women which I have not printed to the famous Ballard Leon library in Oxford early 14 manuscripts in Folio 56 manuscripts in quarto 2 manuscripts in duodecimo one oblong duodecimo Vizt I a transcript of Mr Sommers Saxon dictionary which I made from a printed copy which formerly belonged to the learned Greek a professor Mr. Thwaites who <inr??ked> it with the several 1000 words which he has gleaned together or which I Inc. methodically with the text and I have since added a considerable number of words which may be serviceable to those who may hereafter undertake a new edition of that useful book Folio to advice of A <Seaman> etc.  Dedicated to Archbishop Laud 1634 by Nathaniel not an account of the voyage made by the English for the relief of the French King 1589 an account of the voyage to Calos in Andalusia 1569 at by Sir William Slyngesby a true relation of the voyage to the Isles of azores 1597 by Sir Arthur Gorges all bound in one volume for your three Sir Edmund Warcupp's exact account of the treaty in the isle of Wight all fairly wrote with sir Edmund's our own hand he being at that time Secretary to the parliamentarians I have pasted in the beginning of this manuscript two very curious letters of sir Edmund's own writing relating to the book Folio 4 a dialogue between a Tutor and his pupil wrote by Lord Herbert of Cherbury Folio 5 eight transcript of spell man's life of King Elfred with notes by Obadiah Walker the famous popish master of university college Folio 6 the proceedings which happened between the Lady Frances Howard and Robert Earl of Essex concerning of their divorce Folio 7 King Alfred Saxon translation of Gregory's pastoral care which I transcribed from the very a original book send by the King get to his favourite Bishop Werefrid now Amman at the Hattoman manuscripts and in many places almost obliterated 4 to 2 King Alfred Saxon translation of saint Austins Soliloquies with S. Homilies and other things in Saxon which I transcribed bound up with it 4to three Saxon homily de ffide Catholice transcribed by my dear friend Mr. Broome of Ewithington co Hereford 4 To make such collared and gilded letters as are to be seen frequently in old manuscripts Two Saxon homilies etc transcribed by Mrs. Elizabeth Elstob 4to 5 An attempt towards drawing up a catalogue of learned women by Eliz Elstob 4to 6 An essay upon grammar wrote by the learned and Rev. Mr. Will Elstob 4to 7 Collections relating to the history and antiquities of Gloucestershire supposed to be wrote by John Guillym the Herald 4to 8 extracts from Sir Robert Atkins Gloucestershire with notes etc 4to 9 a conjuring book 4to 10 Thomas Scots apology etc 1614 4to 11 copies of Letters from Archbishop Parker Whitgift <Sancroff> Bps Gibson Nicholson Kennett Tanner Drs Hickes Hopkins of Roger Ascham Hugh Grotins John Ray F Aubrey <Eow Llhwyd> rt all which I transcribed from the originals 4to 12 the universities musterings with other things which have happened in the university since that time by Bryan Twyne 4to This as the original MS 13 Ccollections have relating to the University of Oxford transcribed from of miles Windson's papers by Ant. a Wood 4to 14 Ccollections relating chiefly to the University of Oxford by Anthony aWood 4to 15 an account of our ancient Historians and Biographers by Ant aWood 12mo: 2 the second book of the supplication of souls by Sir Thomas more Knight 12mo: 3 letters to Dr. Thomas James keeper of the boat Leon library from George and Robert Abbott {long list of correspondents}; all the above mentioned manuscripts may be made use of as the statutes direct as soon as they are delivered to the librarian but the following manuscripts which I give to the podium library fees paid volumes in Folio and 41 volumes in quarto containing a vast number of curious and valuable papers and original letters from almost all the great men of the last aged which I very carefully bound up with my own hands and have drawn up indexed to many of the volumes and will do the same for all the rest if it pleases god to spare me life and health and my will and desire is that they may be kept all together in one place and that or not any one of these manuscripts be shown to all consulted by any person upon any occasion whatsoever until six years after my deceased under the penalty of forfeiting of all the manuscripts to my executor are also I leave to my kind friend Mr. Willis's cabinet in the Bodleian gallery five Saxon coins Vizt one of Eadbearht King of Kent one of Burgred King of the Mercians one of Edward the elder one exceeding fine coin of King Edgar one of Edward the Martyr I give likewise to the same cabinet a fair silver Medal of Prince Henry older brother of King Charles I given or rather forced upon me by one John Wickham[1] then of Corpus Christi College now Fellow of Balliol College who afterwards most ungratefully and barbarously and feloniously attempted to take away my reputation on this occasion by reporting in most infamous language that he did not give me this metal but exchanged it with me for a coin in large Brass of Tiberius a most impudent lie this whether he <meant> it to get the medal of me again or to get a Tiberius in large Brass a coin I never possessed and if I had I should have been thought a very unskilled fellow by those who understand such curiosities to have made such an exchange he knows best I suppose in the heat of forging and hammering it out for his vile purpose he forgot that John Estridge Esquire Gentleman Commoner of Corpus Christi College a person of great probity and integrity was both an eye and ear witness of every thing of that passed between us at this time when he gave me this Medal and he has publicly declared particularly to the Rev. Mr. Timothy Neve Fellow of Corpus Christi College and will I am confident depose it upon oath if required that this malicious accusation is entirely false but I forgive him as I hope to be forgiven of the reasons of my taking notice of it in this manner may be seen in the Rev. Mr. Leeds’ Sermons Volume One page 345 To my cousin Mrs. Sarah Thompson wife of Mr. John Thompson Grocer in Camden I leave £5.00 and likewise the pictures of my great Grandfather and Grandmother Edward and Martha Ballard also my uncle John Ballard the Physician’s picture all drawn up on boards To Edward Rowe Mores Esquire living near the Herald's Office London I leave all that part of the original manuscript of my Memories of Learned Women which I printed at Oxford.  Lastly I constitute and appoint my Brother Thomas Ballard my sole executor to whom I leave everything on which he is a on disposed of by my will and my will is that if any of the above mentioned legatees die before me that their legacies go to my said Brother Thomas Ballard and my will and desire is that he deliver or cause to be delivered all the above mentioned legacies as soon as he can conveniently do it at least within six months after my deceased in tests many of this my will I have here unto set my hand and seal this blank day of April in the year of our lord 1754 George Ballard signed sealed published and declared by me there said testator George Ballard as for my last will and testament in the presence of those who aunt my request have subscribed their names as witnesses here unto William Johnson ~ John Thompson

 

This will was proved at London before the right hon. Sir George Lee knight Doctor of Laws Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted the third day of September in the year of our lord seventeen hundred and fifty five by the oath of Thomas Ballard the brother of the deceased and sole executor named in the said will to whom administration was granted of all and singular the goods chattels and credits of the deceased he having been first sworn by commissioned duly to administer.
