In the name of God Amen the 28th day of January in the fifteenth year of the reign of our sovereign Lord Charles the second by the grace of God King of England Scotland France and Ireland etc. I Frances Ballard of Chatham in the county of Kent widow being weak of body yet being of a good mind and memory praised be almighty god therefore do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament in manner and form following (that is to say) Imprimis I commend my soul unto God my merciful creator and my body to the earth from whence it came to be decently interred therein according to the discretion of my executrix hereafter named. And as for those worldly goods and things which the Lord hath afforded unto me I dispose of them as followeth. Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth now the wife of Robert Alderman[i] all that messuage or tenement with the garden platt and appurtenances thereunto belonging situate and being at a certain place called the Green Bank in the parish of Stepney and county of Middlesex now or late in the tenure or occupation of widow Henderson or her assigns to hold unto her my said daughter the executors administrators and assigns immediately from and after my decease for and during out the remainder of the term of years mentioned in the lease by which I hold the same she and they paying one equal share of the rent referred in the said lease. Item I give and bequeath unto my said daughter Elizabeth Alderman my red ruby gold ring and twenty shillings in money. Item I give and bequeath unto my grandchild James Alderman son of the said Robert Alderman[ii] all that messuage or tenement with the garden Platt and appurtenances thereunto belonging now or late in the tenure or occupation of Edward Hawkins or his assigns situate and being at the said place called the Green Bank to hold unto the said James Alderman his executors administrators and assigns immediately from and after my decease before and during out the residue of the term of years mentioned in the lease by which I hold the same he and they paying one equal share of the rent referred in the said lease. Item I give and bequeath unto my grandchild Susanna Alderman[iii] all that messuage or tenement with the garden Platt and appurtenances thereunto belonging situate as aforesaid now or late in the tenure or occupation of John Wright or his assigns to hold unto her the said Susanne her executors administrators and assigns immediately from and after my decease before and during out the remainder of the term of years mentioned in the lease by which I hold the same she and they paying one equal share of the rent aforesaid in the said lease provided always and it is my will that if either of my said two grandchildren shall depart this life without lawful issue of his or her body respectively to be begotten that the survivor of them shall enjoy the said tenements before mentioned to be given unto him or her that shall so depart this life as aforesaid provided likewise that if both my said grandchildren shall depart this life without such lawful issue that then I will the said tenements with their garden platts and appurtenances be enjoyed by my said daughter Elizabeth Alderman her executors administrators and assigns during out all the remainder of the term of years mentioned in the said lease or leases by which the same are holden she and they paying two equal shares of the rent referred in the said lease or leases. Item I give and bequeath unto my grandchild Frances Green daughter of my son-in-law Bartholomew Green by my daughter Martha[iv] all that messuage or tenements situate as aforesaid with the garden Platt and appurtenances thereunto belonging now or late in the tenure or occupation of Master <Bitteridge> or his assigns to hold unto the said Frances Green their executors administrators and assigns immediately from and after my decease for and during the remainder of the term of years mentioned in the lease by which I hold the same she and they paying one equal share referred in the said lease. Item I give and bequeath unto my grandchild Martha Green daughter of the said Bartholomew Green[v] all that messuage or tenement with the garden plot and appurtenances thereunto belonging situate as aforesaid now or late in the tenure or occupation of Master Hignett or his assigns to hold unto her the said Martha my said grandchild her executors administrators and assigns immediately from and after my decease for and during out the remainder of the term of years mentioned in the lease by which I hold the same she and they paying one equal share of the rents referred in the said lease. Provided always that if either of my said last mentioned granddaughters shall depart this life without lawful issue of her respective body to be begotten then I will that the tenements before mentioned to be given unto her shall be enjoyed by the survivor of them their executors administrators and assigns as aforesaid she and they paying two equal shares of the rent referred in the said lease or leases provided likewise that if both of them shall depart this life without such issue then I will that both of the said tenements and premises before mentioned to be given unto them as aforesaid shall be enjoyed by my said daughter Martha Green her executors administrators and assigns for and during out all the remainder of the term of years mentioned in the said lease or leases by which the same are holden she and they paying the said two equal shares of the rents referred in the said lease or leases. Item I give and bequeath unto my sister Elizabeth <Beale>[vi] all that messuage or tenement with the garden platt and appurtenances thereunto belonging situate as aforesaid now or late in the tenure or occupation of <blank> Simpson mariner or his assigns to hold unto her the said Elizabeth Beale and her assigns during the time and term of her natural life she not selling or mortgaging the same for the said time nor any part thereof to any person or persons but keeping the same in good repair and paying one equal share of the rent referred in the lease by which I hold the same and after her decease I give the same unto the child now begotten of the body of my said daughter Elizabeth Alderman if it shall be born alive to hold unto such child its executors administrators and assigns immediately from and after the decease of my said sister Elizabeth Beale for and during out all the remainder of the term of years mentioned in the said lease he she or they paying one equal share of the rent referred in the said lease provided always that if such child shall not be born alive or afterwards shall depart this life without lawful issue then I give the same unto my said grandchild James Alderman his executors administrators and assigns for and during out all the residue of the term of years mentioned in the said lease he and they paying the said one equal share of the rent referred in the said lease. Item I give and bequeath unto my sister-in-law (whose maiden name was Joan Eaton)[vii] the sum of ten shillings. Item I give and bequeath unto my said daughter Martha Green all that one messuage or tenement with the garden platt and appurtenances thereunto belonging situate as aforesaid now or late in the tenure or occupation of widow Oliver or her assigns and also all that piece or parcel of ground lately pailed in on the backside of the said tenements and to hold unto her the said Martha Green my said daughter the executors administrators and assigns from the day of my decease for and during out all the remainder of the term of years mentioned in the lease or leases by which I hold the same she and they paying one equal share (for the said tenement) of the rent referred in the said lease and it is my will and order that the said several shares of rent be paid unto my said daughter Martha Green and she to pay the same with her own share unto the respective landlord or landlords according to the respective leases by which the said tenements and premises are holden and also I will that she my said daughter Martha Green shall keep the said leases allowing true copies thereof to such of the said parties to whom any of the said tenements are hereinbefore bequeathed as shall require the same he she and they paying for transcribing of such copies. Item all the rest of my goods chattels ready money household goods and whatsoever shall be due owing or belonging unto me at the time of my decease I give and bequeath unto my said daughter Martha Green whom I do here appoint nominate and ordain to be the sole executrix of this my last will and testament. And I do hereby revoke and make void and null all former wills and testaments by me heretofore made and do appoint this and none other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I the said Frances Ballard have hereunto put my hand and seal the day and year first above written – the mark of the said Frances Ballard signed sealed published and declared by the within mentioned Francis Ballard to be her last will and testament in the presence of us J <Lihurst>, David Rogers, Tho: <Heaviside>

[iii] Frances had a granddaughter named Susanna Alderman who was the daughter of Robert Alderman and Elizabeth. There is a baptism for Susanna Alderman daughter of Robert Alderman and Elizabeth on 22 MAR 1661 at Bull Lane Independent, Stepney, London, England.
