Inquisition Post Mortem – Henry VII Volume 2

No 147 – Robert Ballard

Writ wanting; inquisition Monday after St.Martin, the Bishop 14 Henry VII.

 

He was seised of the undermentioned manors of Horton, &c in fee, & being so seised by deed dated 29 March, 49 & 1 Henry VI, gave the manors of Westcombe & Spittlecombe & land &c in Greenwich, Charleton & Writtlemershe, to [William Wild], clerk, John Hayne, clerk, Nicholas Stathum & Hugh Stepulton, their heirs & assigns, to the use of himself & the performance of his last will, [& they were] seised thereof accordingly in fee; & of the said manner of Horton he died so seised.

 

He was seised of the undermentioned mills [at Deptford] & being so seised, by his deed of 29 March, 49 & 1 Henry VI, gave them to William Wilde, clerk, Hugh Stepulton, John Churche, Richard Style, William Poode & William Soleham, their heirs & assigns for the performance of his last will & they were seised thereof accordingly in fee.

 

William Wilde, clerk & William Sq…. were seised of the undermentioned messuages, land, &c in Sturmouth in fee & being so seised by deed thereof enfeoffed the said Robert Ballard, John Colowe & John Fyneux, knight, chief justice of England, by the name of John Fyneux, their heirs & assigns to the use of the said Robert Ballard & his heirs, whereby they were seised thereof in fee.

 

By a certain deed indented dated AD 1470 he agreed & granted upon espousals between him & Isobel, late his wife, & in consideration of 300 marks, paid him by Joan Kent, mother [of the said Isobel], that he would make sufficient [estate in law] to William Wild, clerk, John Hayne, clerk, Nicholas Stathum & Hugh Stepulton, gentlemen & their heirs & assigns, [of lands] within the county of Kent of the yearly value of 20L above outgoings to the use of them the same Robert Ballard & Isobel & the heirs of their bodies begotten; & that he would make a sufficient & secure estate in law to them, their heirs & assigns of other lands & tenements within the same county of the yearly value of 20L beyond outgoings to the use of the same Robert & Isobel & the heirs of Robert, with remainder to William his son & heir apparent & the heirs of his body begotten, with remainder in default to Clement, his other son & the heirs [of his body begotten] with remainder [in default] to the heirs of the body of him Robert Ballard begotten, with remainder in default to his right heirs.

 

He died 24 October [last] W(illiam) Ballard, aged 17 & more his son & heir.

Manors of Westcombe & Spittlecombe, in the parishes of Grenewich, & Charleton 20a land, 100a meadow in Charleton & Whritelmershe, worth 20l held of the Countess Richmond, service unknown.

Two watermills in Depford, worth 6l held of the said countess, service unknown.

Two messuages, 40a land, 6a meadow, 2a wood in the town & fields of Sturmowthe, worth 8 marks 6s 8d, held of the Archbishop of Canterbury, service unknown.
